What makes UC different than most rugby clubs?

Differences

University

Unlike most rugby clubs we are connected to a university. And that’s a big deal. Because of this it makes our players eligible to play for the New Zealand Universities team. In 2025 four of our Premier players were selected to represent NZU and play against Japan U20’s national side. And in 2024 we were lucky enough to host a game at UC.

Women

Some clubs have a women’s team, UC has the original and most successful women’s team in the country. Having won the title again in 2024, they now hold 22 titles over the span of 42 years. But it doesn’t stop there. We also have a development team and they are all integral members of the club.

Colts

Our Colts programme is something different to every other club in New Zealand. We have seven colts sides representing us each week, with a huge internal trial process to ensure everyone is given an opportunity. If you are a school leaver and wondering where’s the best place to play your rugby…. you’ve found it.

Culture

Because of each of the individual elements of the the club (university, colts, women, success), our culture is different also. If you come down on a Saturday, you’ll find a vibrant atmosphere, where our players welfare is the number 1 priority. We like to have fun, we like to succeed on and off the field, but we want to provide a welcoming environment for everyone.

Aspire to anything

If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, then register to play at UC Rugby for the upcoming year.
