If you’re wondering what’s happened to the results that used to be posted by the CRFU on a Sunday afternoon, they can be found here, although they seem to be taking a few days to update after the weekend for some grades.

Please note team duty is slightly different to previous years as we have staff manning the bar. However, duty teams are still expected to:

1) stock the fridge

2) clear away empty bottles and glasses

3) stack empty crates out in the chiller

4) be on hand to help with wiping down tables and putting up chairs at the end of the night

At Edgar MacIntosh 1: University 48 (Cam Watkins 2, Sam Godwin, Johnny Van Der Velde, Jone Macilai, Andrew Makalio, Nigel Gibb, Brad Hemopo tries; Marty McKenzie 4 conv) beat Marist Albion 26 (Penalty try; Matthew Morrison, Te Morehu Reweri, Rowan O’Gorman tries; Tom Reekie 2 conv). HT: 19-14. Referee: James Munro.

There was double the interest in this clash firstly where the students took the honours in an eight-try romp. They unleashed a classy and speedy backline where wing Cameron Watkins was to the forefront in scoring a double. Secondly local fans were waiting for the reappearance of All Black and Crusader fullback Israel Dagg,
who was playing his first game after nine weeks recovering from a serious knee injury. Dagg played the first 40min and was eager for work, but was obviously wanting to ease himself back gradually. He did have a hand in setting up a try for his skipper Sam Godwin after 30min when he joined the line and put Godwin, who had been scouting wide, into space with a well-timed pass. Reflecting on his first half effort, Dagg confirmed he was happy to get through his time on the field without any niggles and while he needed to step up his workload he was ready to make the next step.

Marist Albion were set a daunting assignment. Not only were they facing an All Black but they were against an opposition containing three Crusaders in Marty McKenzie, Jone Macilai and Andrew Makalio. And while they had little answer to the collective attacking power of the students their scrum had an edge which made a statement in the form of a penalty try after 25min. University were quickly into their work in the first quarter which produced two converted tries to Watkins; the first when he profited from a kick in behind the line which was not secured by the defence and the second when he showed blistering pace down the sideline with little room to move
in and around behind the posts to dot down.

The home side scrum had Varsity pinned on defence and the pressure of a series of penalty scrums was finally broken when referee James Munro lost patience and awarded a penalty try. Again, just before half-time with the students’ scrum on retreat and disintegrating, hooker Matthew Morrison was on hand to dot down and reduce the visitor’s lead to 19-14. The students ran the ball at every opportunity in the second half and the pressure and enterprise produce a further five tries, firstly to halfback Jonny Van Der Velde who produced an audacious dummy from a ruck to run 15m.
Then replacement wing Macilai profited from a searching run from Watkins who had moved to fullback. He carved off territory before sending Macilai on his way. First-five McKenzie produced a “Barrett” like cross-kick which neatly found wing Tailah Love, who set up replacement hooker Makalio for a try and stretch the lead to 38-14 running into the last quarter.
