VIPERETTES IN THE FINALWell, at least one or our teams has made a final! The Viperettes take on their arch rivals this season (aka Christchurch Football Club) on Saturday. Kickoff is at 2:45 at Rugby Park.

We’re expecting a big turn out from the whole club, and with the brewery’s delivery coming late in the season everyone is warmly invited back to the clubrooms for a “bit of a knees up” afterwards, cause there’s a tonne of crates out the back and they expire before the start of next season. As such, we’ll be running a special on everyone’s favourite: Speights crate bottles for the princely sum of $5*, as long as you were along supporting! Collect a stamp from Meatsey at the game to show you were there and then head back to the clubrooms to celebrate a mighty victory.

People wanting to car pool (or in need of a lift) should meet at the clubrooms at 1:45pm for a 2:00pm departure.

Check out the facebook event here “Varsity Vipers vs Christchurch” for up to date information, and remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just poor choice of clothing!

 * Crate bottles last cost that in the mid-late 2000s

MILESTONES

Another milestone for a long serving club member last week – Julia Smith from the Viperettes clocked up her 200th game on Saturday, comprising 110 playing for HSOB and 90 for the mighty Viperettes. Well done and we look forward to seeing you crack the tonne next year.

Viperettes 60 – Sydenham 7

The sun was shining over Lincoln and the nearly 100 spectators had come from far and wide. They were mainly there to watch the Lincoln Colts in their final – but just behind them, on Field 2, half basked in shade and with the team benches lovingly crafted from a patch of dirt, history was being made. Julz lead out the Vipers in her 200th Division 1 match a feat we are all very proud of her for. Julz reports that she was overwhelmed with emotion and in this moment could barely think, but I know she was thinking, “Why the fuck don’t we have a home semi?”

To those who did turn out to watch, thanks for your support, you missed an excellent spread at the postmatch.

On to the game, summed up by our glorious and never short of eloquent Captain, “Sorry for the first 20 and you’re welcome for the second half.”

You know a team is performing well when the Player of the Day is selected for falling over in the warm up, congratulations to Jess Hansen. Likely bitter about this award is Lizzy P, whose raw athleticism in the backs tore shreds off the Sydenham defence.

In the end the Vipers racked up an impressive 60-7 victory which takes us into the final versus Christchurch this weekend, Saturday 2:45pm Rugby Park. Metservice has it pegged to be a balmy 8⁰C but it’s going to be chocca full of supporters so that shouldn’t bother you. See you all there!

Tigers 0 – Marist Albion 8

The Tigers headed down to South Hagley park full of vim and vigour, and turned in probably their best performance of the season on Saturday. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, with two missed penalties and a held-up try their only scoring opportunities of the match. In a game characterised by hard defence by both sides and an overly whistle-happy ref with a hatred for maroon and gold (seriously, I’ve never liked that guy) the Tigers were unlucky not to get some points on the board.

Number 8 and Captain Logan “The Ginger Destroyer” Thomson had a stand out game ably assisted by a stalwart and energetic forward pack who were able to gain something approaching dominance at scrum time. The lineout, however, left a bit to be desired again this week and cost us possession multiple times.

The backs had some good possession and ran with purpose, fullback Simon “Thunder Thighs” Carden ran hard from the back and gained plenty of metres off his boot. Kev Martin laid some hurt out in the midfield with a number of crunching tackles.

Run of the match probably goes to the ever consistent Dane Hart, who fielded a kick from a penalty, near the sticks, and got as far as the ten metre line before being taken to ground, evading countless would-be tacklers on the way.

We’d like to thank all the guys that have donned the Tigers jersey this year, particiularly those who are leaving us for sunnier climes (like Joao, who goes back to Brazil at the end of the year), Jacko, who heads to England and a couple of others who I’ve forgotten the exact details of. We’d also like to thank our long suffering coach, John “Hardon” Wright, who’s been the key instigator in everything for the last six seasons.

We’d also like to thank our sponsors this season, so from the Fritz’s Weiners – Elevate Crane Services – Global Rugby – Avonhead Tavern – Tigers, see you next season!
